God winked

July 13th, 2012 by Regina Brett

Ever have one of those moments when God winks at you?

Today I sent a brief email to a co-worker who broke his leg and just got the cast off but can’t yet return to work.

Here’s what I wrote:

“Good to hear the cast is off. Do you feel like a castaway now? Bad joke. Hope you are keeping up your spirits.

“You're probably tired of being in the "slow lane." That's what I called it when I had chemo & radiation years ago. It felt like everyone else was zooming by me and all I was doing was trying to feel better or at least keep down lunch.

“This is a strange precious time, really. You may never get this chance to step away from your life and the busy-ness of it. Savor what you can in this slow lane. I remember watching a butterfly land on my balcony rail every day at 11 am. It had a flight pattern and I was there to witness it. Small stuff, but isn't that what life is really made of?

“Be well and enjoy the small and slow show that you get to witness.”

I hit send, then walked into my bedroom to get something. There, on the balcony rail, was a butterfly.

I looked at the clock. It was 11 a.m.

Not kidding. Life sure is amazing.

I remember being always in a rush as if I wanted to squeezed every minute of the day but I always felt that time just went by me water. No matter how fast I worked time was never enough all I felt was nothing. I stop doing that now I try to stay present for the little things to come.

Today is my autistic daughter s 30th birthday. She is happy, able to hold down two part time minimum wage jobs, get herself there back by public transportation, volunteer. She will always live with her stepdad me, but we don t mind she is smarter than us keeps us feeling young necessary. So I am, for the first time ever, calling July 18th not only her birth day, my giving birth day am celebrating, too. Elizabeth has taught me tolerance, patience, the ability to look at the world in an emotions free, child way the 11:00 butterfly citing, she is acutely aware of patterns in life nature here to remind me of their importance. And God s wink? I lost my mother to a rare disorder when I was only 14 she was also born on July 18th. Elizabeth has been a gift a reminder of Mother s love, in my own mom s absence.

How often do we rush through our days complain at how unhappy stressed we feel? It is good to know that slowing down to smell the flowers, watch the butterfly, as it were, really cam be calming...makes you think. Time to yourself can be good.
