How to be Funny

August 27th, 2012 by Regina Brett

Everyone says they want to date or marry someone with a sense of humor.

What exactly is a sense of humor and how do you get one?

We just talked about "How to be funny" on The Regina Brett Show on WKSU 89.7 FM.

You can listen to the entire show by podcast.

Our guests were:

Mike Polk, Jr., creator of The Hastily Made Cleveland Tourism Videos.

Dave Schwensen, manager of the Cleveland Improv Compedy Club and Restaurant.

Ray Lesser, publisher and editor of the Funny Times.

Here's what I learned:

Everyone has a sense of humor, but humor varies. Know your audience. What is funny to them?

Life gives you laughs. Use them as your material to make others laugh. Mine your life for your material. What's funny about your life?

You can't make something funny if you don't think it's funny yourself. If you're uncomfortable with it, don't go there.

Don't use stale jokes that people have already heard.

Don't make jokes about people who are powerless, poor or uneducated.

Learn who you are on stage. What is your comedy voice?

Jot down every day the funny, unusual, curious things you see, hear and experience.

Every day, work your funny bone to the bone.

Learn from the masters. Watch funny movies, comics, read the best comedy writers.

Whether you're the one telling the joke or listening to one, lighten up. The world could use more laughs.
