What's it like to host a live call-in radio show?
You sit in front of a microphone, put on a headset and listen to your heart pound as the clock on the wall silently counts down in red the seconds until the music hits and announces you're live.
For over three and a half years, I hosted a radio show every Friday at 9:07 a.m. Eastern Standard Time on WCPN 90.3 FM, Cleveland's NPR affiliate.
Lesson 22, from my book God Never Blinks: 50 Lessons for Life's Little Detours provides the mantra for the show: Overprepare and go with the flow. You never know where a guest or a caller will take you. That's the thrill of live radio.
The Sound of Ideas is a call-in show that covers current events and significant issues in Greater Cleveland. I loved the shows that highlighted issues and people of universal interest regardless of where you live.
